This study aims at investigating code switching and code mixing found in the language of the research seminar activity. This research is focused on the factors that influence students of English Department to switch or mix their languages from English into Indonesian or vice versa when they are participating in the research seminar of English Department students Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Muhammadiyah University of Jember in the 2005-2006 academic year.

Theoretically, the research is expected to enrich the study of sociolinguistics, especially about code switching and code mixing. Practically, this research is hoped that the readers will take real description about the significance of the code switching toward the good interaction. And by reading this thesis, it is hoped that the studying sociolinguistic not only be oriented to some theories and information which are taken from book but they are also motivated to take particular interesting phenomena in their society. Then by study code switching, at least we understand about the function of language better. And then the last, it is also hoped to the students of English Department understand about the phenomenon of using code switching in the research seminar as formal activity in order that they can increase their English.

The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative and the data collection method by doing non participants observation in the 10 seminars activities within 3 months, the data taking from February 4th 2006 until may 6th 2006.

The result show that there are five factors that influence students to switch or mix their Indonesian into English or vice versa, when they participate in the seminar activity. They are, Contextual (topic of the conversation), Personal (participant/speaker), Quoting somebody else, Repetition used for clarification, and Effectiveness.

And then the dominant factor of using code switching and code mixing in the research seminar of English Department students are repetition used for clarification, which is twenty seven times (31,9 %).

From the result, it is seen that most of the students of English Department who participate in the research seminar switch or mix their languages under the influence of repetition used for clarification, which means that when they speak in the research seminar, they like to switch their languages because of want to clarify something by repeat the same meaning sentence in two different languages.
