Abstract


Based on informal interview with the English teacher and preliminary study test of SMK Baitul Hikmah Tempurejo Jember had problem in reading. It was known that many students still found difficulties in comprehending a reading text in learning English. Moreover, the teacher often used a silent reading technique in teaching reading comprehension skill in which the teacher asks the students to read the text by them selves and it was shown by the average score of the preliminary test is 57% student get score more than 65. To face this common problem there must be some ways and solution to improve the students reading comprehension through the available teaching method. In this case the researcher used Directed Reading Activity to improve reading comprehension.


In this research, the general problem is “How to improve the Reading Comprehension through Directed Reading Activity [DRA] of the second grade students of SMK Baitul Hikmah Tempurejo Jember in the 2010/2011 academic year?” and the research objective is intended to know the Directed Reading Activity is able to improve Reading Comprehension of the second grade students of SMK Baitul Hikmah Tempurejo Jember in the 2010/2011.


The design of this research was class room action research. The research subject was XI C class was consist 27 students and to obtain the research data used test and observation. To calculate the student reading score, the researcher used this formula:




The result of score analysis, in the first cycle shows that from 27 students there are only 52% of them who get score ≥ 65. This means that the rest of the students do not achieve the target score. Therefore, the action is continued to the second cycle. And in the second cycle, there are only 15% of them who get score
≤ 65, so the rest of them or 85 % of them get score ≥ 65. This means that more students achieve the target score. To sum up, the uses of Directed Reading Activity method was able improve the reading comprehension of the XI C grade students.
